Who would have thought that in determining this season’s trends, the powers that be sought their inspiration from a nursery rhyme? As the weather starts to pick up a little and the sunshine drags a smile and a skip from everyone, keep these themes in mind whilst searching for your summer wardrobe.
Tinker: Ok, how to grasp the loosely fitted, flowing fabrics idea without actually looking like a tinker? Not so tricky if you keep the balance right. Stick to pastels and let the statement be made with natural makeup, denim and a splash of colour here or there. Basic outline of the trend is to take a dress like this Topshop number, (also check out their Spring/Summer Meadow collection while you’re there) add some aviator sunglasses, a pair of never-go-out-of-fashion gladiator sandals, throw on a loose cardi and you’re sorted!

Tailor: Thankfully, the trusted blazer has not yet deserted us and can remain with pride in wardrobes all over the country. As summer rolls in, the trousers are getting looser so avoid an office getup and stick to a tailored jacket with a vest-top and some denim shorts/skinnies. Oasis have introduced a new skirt in the past few weeks and it looks set to be a winner (regardless of the first impression of frumpiness!)

Soldier: Attention please, in case you’ve been under a rock for the past number of months you may have noticed that military is once again back on the scene. This time think fitted jackets and cropped trousers but leave the string vests to Uncle Andy and Rab C Nesbitt. Those roughed up, army-issue looking boots that every single student seems to own? Yes, they’re still here too. It goes without saying that the basic colour scheme is khaki and shades of brown/cream but mix it up a little and don’t be afraid to add some navy here and there.

Sailor: If going out dressed head to toe in horizontal stripes isn’t your thing, fear not my friends because this time, accessories say it all and River Island have got it all sussed when it comes to nautical fancies. For those a little more adventurous, dust off the jumpsuits because they’re making a come back and stripes and spots are everywhere. Perhaps it’s the fact that dressing like a captain makes us feel closer to the beach or simply because there is a different style for everyone that makes us love the sailor-inspired clothes but whatever it is, we’re not kicking this trend to the kerb any time soon.
